>> General Tips to Reduce Your Risk
Curious about drugs and alcohol? We want to help. The MPowerment Project is all about healthy choices. While the healthiest choice is not using drugs or alcohol, we understand that sometimes that isn't always the choice you want to (or can) make.
STAY HYDRATED
Many drugs cause dehydration. This can lead to passing-out or other harmful effects. Try drinking water before, during, and after drinking alcohol or using drugs. If at a house party, put out a pitcher of water on the drink table so its more easily accessible.
EAT FOOD
Just as drinking water can help keep you hydrated, food can help slow down the effects of alcohol and some other drugs. Having food in your stomach can help ensure that you don't get too drunk or high too fast. It will also help your body to "refuel" itself during and after use.
DON'T MIX
Many overdoses are caused by mixing drugs. Different drugs do different things to your body and combining them can cause certain parts of your body to shut down. Some drugs, especially alcohol, can magnify the effects of others, making you overdose much quicker. If you are going to use, stick to one type of drug at a time.
KNOW YOUR LIMITS
Many of the horror stories you hear about what happens to people when drinking or using drugs can be avoided by knowing your limits. Everyone is different, so just because your friend can down 6 drinks and be fine doesn't mean that you can. If you are taking something the first time, be sure to start in small doses. Also know that certain drugs can take over an hour to kick in. Your body may also take a lot of time to process substances through your system. Having another drink or hit while your body is still processing the first one can make you higher for longer than you want, or may lead to overdose. Become familiar with how your body reacts and know your limits.
STAY WITH FRIENDS
If you are going to drink or get high, do it with people that you trust. Not only is it more fun to do these activities with friends, but it is also safer. Make sure you know each other's limits so you can keep an eye out for each other. Having friends around is also a good way to make sure you don't end up going home with someone you don't want to, and to make sure you don't over do it.
KEEP IN MIND DRUGS ARE ILLEGAL
Most drugs are illegal (including alcohol if you are under 21). If you get busted using or even just holding drugs you can get a criminal record, lose your job, or get expelled from school. These kinds of things can make it a lot harder to get into college or get jobs. They can also cost you a lot of money in fines! Also, if you are under the influence, you may do things that could get you into trouble, such as becoming violent, stealing, or driving.
